Student Use of Student Technology Centers (updated 09-14-2005)

Use of the Student Technology Centers is for the purposes related to IUPUI's mission of education, research and public services. Students, faculty and staff may use these computing resources only for purposes related to their studies, instruction, or other university-sanctioned activities. Individuals not engaged in the use of the computer resources will be asked to leave the area when others need to utilize the technology.

The following are guidelines governing the use of Student Technology Centers:

  • Cell phones must be muted when in the STCs. Everyone entering an STC is required to turn off the ringer of their cell phone. In addition, cell phone calls should not be made or answered while in an STC.
  • Food and drinks are not permitted in the STCs. To ensure a sanitary working environment and to reduce the chance of workstation down-time due to accidental spills, please place and keep drinks limited to supplied drink tables or in approved areas.
  • Student Technology Centers are academic environments. The STCs are intended for student use while pursuing academic goals. Please respect the rights of other people working in the labs by speaking quietly and minimizing personal distractions that might impede other students from completing their work. Loitering or sleeping in the labs is prohibited.
  • Headphones are required when listening to music or any audible software while working in the STCs. Students will need to bring their own headphones to the lab. Headphones are NOT available for check-out in the labs.
  • Use of Group Workstations. Group workstations are provided as collaborative workspaces. Individuals using collaberative workspaces may be asked to move to the next available single-user workspace when a group requires use of the resource.
  • Use of tobacco products in the STCs is strictly forbidden. Anyone found smoking, chewing or using snuff tobacco will be told to stop, or leave the lab immediately. Those choosing to leave will not lose access to their workstation if they return within 15 minutes.
  • Student may leave their workstations for up to fifteen (15) minutes. If you take a break and are gone longer than 15 minutes, your workstation may be given to the next person waiting in line. If a workstation is locked and the customer has not returned after fifteen minutes, the machine will be restarted and unsaved data will be lost.
  • Always log out of STC computers before leaving the workstation. Anyone sitting down at an STC computer on which you have not logged out will have access to your identity and accounts and can inflict great harm to you if so inclined. In addition to closing applications at the end of each session, students should always log out of the workstation and watch the computer to make sure the log out was successfully completed before leaving the site.
  • Never share your password with anyone. NO ONE has the right to ask you for your password! If you suspect someone may have gained access to your password, the password should be changed immediately at http://password.iu.edu. Remember, you can be held accountable for the actions of anyone using your account, with or without your permission! If you believe your account has been compromised, please notify the UITS IT Security Office itso@iu.edu as soon as possible!
  • Running TSR (terminate and stay resident) programs, server programs, or any other program in an unattended state, is not permitted in the STCs. These kinds of programs degrade system performance and affect subsequent users of the workstation.
  • Tampering with Student Technology Centers workstations is not permitted. In order to insure a uniform appearance in the labs, the Student Technology Centers have developed an elaborate model for maintaining a secure and highly reliable network of personal workstations for student computing. Students found tampering with any of the workstations, display devices, printers, or other computing hardware in a Student Technology Center may lose some or all of their computing privileges.
  • Any of the following practices may result in the loss of computing privileges or other disciplinary action:
    • The use of a username other than one's own to gain access to a Student Technology Center workstation.
    • Any attempt to disconnect a workstation, any of its components, or any other computing hardware in a Student Technology Center.
    • Any attempt to circumvent the network in a Student Technology Center by connecting workstations together.
    • Any attempt to circumvent security in a Student Technology Center.
    • Any unauthorized attempt to attach a device or cable of any kind to the back of a workstation. On most STC workstations, front panel connections for headphones and USB-compliant devices are readily available for the convenience of our students. If the provided connection points are insufficient, please see a consultant for assistance.
